Woodworker's Journal Magazine Click Here to Subscribe Sign Up to Get Free Plans Visit Our Online Store Tiger Maple Purpleheart Kitchen Table August 30th , 2011 by Matt Becker 2 Comments In addition to the beautiful inlay and the two wood species’ contrasting colors , the coordination between the modified tusk tenons and the extension slide handles are incredible details not to be . missed This is a kitchen table I made out of tiger maple and purpleheart . The purpleheart table legs kept splitting on me down the center so I decided to hide the splitting with tiger maple inlays to match the table top . I also made two foot long extensions for the table that attach with pegs to sliding boards that are concealed under the ends of the table top . Each extension has two folding legs for storage
Pictured in the previous post on the right side of the two bobbins is the whorl with the first repair of missing wood. Because of the end grain orientation of the wood in spinning wheel bobbins and whorls they are subject to damage and this one was not in good shape. Because of the extent [...]
The most beneficial discoveries come when you least expect them. Last week as I wrapped up finish on the desk for the November issue and from our upcoming book "Furniture in the Southern Style", I was about to sand my first couple coats of shellac. I dug through my sandpaper drawer and soon found out [...]
This article is by Doug Turner of Turner Custom Furniture. I’ve been doing some “deep thinking” lately. The question: “How can I sell more handmade furniture?” Let’s assume I suddenly have a much larger advertising budget. I run ads on … Continue reading →
Back when I made my living as a cabinetmaker, the projects I enjoyed most were the ones where we went out on a limb and built something we had never made before. It's like riding a good roller coaster: scary after you make the decision, walk through the turnstiles, and crawl up the first hill; [...]

I started documenting the restoration of this wheel here. There are pictures there showing some of the damage to this nice old wheel. I usually use a dovetail Dutchman to repair the small endgrain fractures and lacuna on bobbins and whorl pulleys, but I tried a different approach on these. I made small round bottom [...]

I am behind on my restoration work, I now have two spinning wheels to repair in my shop. So while they have some of the same damage to the same parts I am repairing both at the same time. This wheel {both are European} has a nasty bent crank and the shaft of the opposite [...]
Sometimes I need to be reminded that not everyone who reads our blogs are at the same level of woodworking experience, and that I should give explanations as if my readers were beginners. I learned that lesson when I was teaching my first continuing education class in woodworking. It quickly became apparent that I had [...]
<a href="http://www.popularwoodworking.com/woodworking-blogs/editors-blog/tool-auction-ambivalence"I attended my first tool auction last Saturday, and like most (adult) auction-goers, I was caught up in the potential for bargains (there were a passel of Emmert vices on offer...but sadly, no bargains on that front). But the auction also induced a touch of melancholy. It used to be that auctions and antiques shops [...]

We were excited about the opportunity to bring Thomas Moser's "How to Build Shaker Furniture" up to today's publishing standards. While the book has been an inspiration to many, it hadn't been updated in 30 years. What's the difference? Take a look at the two photos below for an example of old and new. [...]
Woodworker's Journal Magazine Click Here to Subscribe Sign Up to Get Free Plans Visit Our Online Store Buying or Selling Logs For Lumber Log Rules Part 2 August 22nd , 2011 by Tim Knight Leave a Comment From the time the very first Europeans set foot on American soil , we have tried to develop systems to estimate the board feet of finished lumber we can obtain from a green log . It seems straightforward : figure the number of 1-inch thick planks that can be sawn , subtract for the width of the saw blade kerf and for waste trim and there you would have it , what is known as a log rule . However , it i s not that simple , because that does not take into consideration the high variability between logs , equipment used to saw those logs , and the operators of that equipment . One of the issues of using a table saw safely is that many of the things intended to keep us safe don't work well when you really need them. Ripping thin pieces on the table saw is a good example. In our shop, we have an overhead guard with built in dust collection. It's a [...]

There is a very similar design on page 4 of Hide Glue – Historical & Practical Applications with a couple of changes. I found the yellow brass bowl [it was a compote, with a soldered on foot, which I removed]. I had given it to Brian Westover, the Blacksmith at This is The Place Heritage [...]
When designing a piece of furniture, you really can't go wrong with using the golden ratio. The same might be true for workbenches, but we'll have to see about that. For my bench, I'm deviating from the norm and putting a foot on the legs of my bench. Standard bench legs always looked unresolved to [...]

Woodworker's Journal Magazine Click Here to Subscribe Sign Up to Get Free Plans Visit Our Online Store How Much Lumber is in a Log August 3rd , 2011 by Tim Knight Leave a Comment Foresters use a number of mathematical formulas to estimate the board feet of lumber in a cut log . Using one of these formulas , known as log rules , 8221 you , too , can estimate the amount of sawn lumber a log will produce . This can be useful , say , if you may want to estimate what you will owe the portable sawmill owner for sawing it up for you since he probably will charge you per board foot The estimate will get you close so that the final bill will not be a complete . surprise A log rule attempts to estimate the number of board feet of lumber in a log . A board foot in its purest sense is a board 1 thick
